Invasion of the ‘Movement Snatchers ‘

Op Ed Commentary

Go back and really study the progressive movements of the late 1800s and early 1900s with all the farmer’s alliances, Knights of Labor and socialist groups that formed during those times. Yes, many were Marxist organizations that rallied the working folks to unite and push back the feudalistic repressions of the ownership class. Notice how I say ‘ownership class ‘, because isn’t that what it is really all about? Private ownership is a hallmark of American Capitalism… all capitalism for that matter. Private interests trump public interests each and every time! How can the few who have and control so much (actually less than even the 1% that the Occupy movement focused on) get what they want? Duh, well, it all goes back to making it legitimate and legal… so they do it through control and influence of politics AKA the 2 Party 1 Party System!

This column is not going to concentrate on the most heinous of the aforementioned cabal, the Republicans. The only credit this writer grants them is their candor to be forthright about their intentions, which is to protect the super rich and the Ayn Rand cult of private interests over public interests.  Yes, they are great artistes in the use of propaganda to make most of the suckers who follow and vote for them believe the biggest lie of all: The super rich deserve what they have and so can YOU! This writer has spent 45 years working for owners of perhaps over 100 different businesses. Never have I experienced even one such owner who got where he or she is by simple creativity and hard work. In each case, people were lied to, scammed in some way, and exploited for the owner to achieve that success. Period! Isn’t that what makes America so great… for the very wealthy? ‘You all can become successful and rich if you too follow the formula. ‘So, for purposes of this column, let us forget the Republicans and their ‘winner–take- all- he- can ‘philosophy.

We have the Democratic Party, which, as expressed in my opening, has subverted and co-opted most if not all of American progressive movements for over 150 years. Whenever the exploited miners or farm workers or whomever rose up to finally stand against the super rich who literally owned them, sooner or later here come the Democrats to bring them under their Big Tent. When Big Bill Haywood and Mother Jones and so many others risked their lives (and lost them) in futile hope of creating that One Big Union…along came the Democrats. Time and time again, the progressive movement in America was stifled and disenfranchised by the latter. Oh yes, they always took progressive movements into the fold, with promises similar to Slick Willy’s ‘I feel your pain ‘and Barack Obama’s ‘Hope and Change ‘. The icing on the cake was when we invaded and occupied Iraq in 2003. The overwhelming majority of Democrats either remained silent or jumped onto the bandwagon of illegality and immorality, following the parade of pariahs. We who knew better and cared about the course our nation was on, finally got out on the street corners and public squares to protest. The Democrats continually acquiesced when the Bush / Cheney gang demanded hundreds of billions of our tax dollars year after year. Finally, in 2006, Rep. Conyors held an informal hearing in the basement of the Congress (the Republicans would not allow it to be upstairs). This writer sat and watched it on C-Span, with almost tears in my eyes. Finally, I said to my other activist friends, finally these Democrats are going to get balls! At the conclusion, Conyors, ranking member of the Judiciary Committee, announced: ‘When we take back control of the Congress and I am chairman of the committee, the first order of business will be to conduct a thorough Congressional hearing on the run-up to the invasion of Iraq, I can promise you that! ‘

Now, some 6+ years later, we still see this Military Industrial Empire with sharper teeth than ever before. We see the majority of the American public still hypnotized by Orwellian doublespeak and propaganda full blasted by a bought and paid for mainstream media. Richard Nixon, in a moment of candor during the Watergate scandal, put it most succinctly: “It’s the lie that gets you! “ When will we finally see the truth permeate to the surface of our mass consciousness; so much so that ‘All the king’s horses and all the king’s men ‘cannot keep it from the ethers? You can forget about political parties doing this vital reformist work. No, the system is too rigged for even that. It will take an upsurge of we the overwhelming majority of fair and decent Americans to pull back the empire. When instead of a handful standing on the street corners or before the city councils and offices of our state and federal elected officials, there will be hundreds, thousands showing up regularly to say ‘ Enough is enough!!’ Think about that the next time you choose to vent at your spouse or Uncle Jack, or at the boob tube. Rocky Balboa said it best in one of his films: “Go for it! “
