What this writer is about to tell you will not be covered on anything in the mainstream media. You won’t see it, hear it or read about it in any mainstream venue… period! Our great nation is now and has been for decades a Military Industrial Empire, stretching out throughout the world. Our close to 900 military bases forms the imprint of a giant jackboot that tells the rest of the world who is boss. Our empire has a history of tolerating tyrants and stifling free democracy movements worldwide… all in the name of corporate success. Go out and get William Blum’s 1995 book Killing Hope to understand the extent of what our empire has done. Everything that our founding fathers had worked so hard to formulate has been erased away by our actions worldwide. General Smedley Butler realized this all too well when he wrote his 1930s essay War Is a Racket. Yet, far too few Americans know these facts, and they never will, so long as the mainstream media is their only source of understanding.
We have countless issues to deal with here in America. Yet, the mother of all issues should be this empire that controls our lives and accelerates our demise. How can we survive economically when over half of the federal tax revenue we send to Uncle Sam goes for military spending? Whatever amount of jobs this spending creates is overshadowed by the loss of basic services and repairs to our infrastructure for lack of funds. When it costs over one million dollars a year to keep a soldier in Afghanistan (of which the soldier receives perhaps $ 30- 40,000) that money could be used, should be used, for other needs at home. How many police officers, firefighters, teachers, librarians, and health care aides could that money support? The real question of course, one which the mainstream news talk shows will never debate, is what the hell we even are doing in that country!? Why the bases in over 100 countries? Why the number of WMDs that we produce and store, and sell to others? Why, why, why all the things we spend on maintaining this military empire, while at home our cities crumble along with the streets? If we here in the United States did what the Europeans did after WW2 and placed our power lines underground, would Hurricane Sandy have been so devastating? If we spent our tax dollars on securing our shorelines with levees and barriers, instead of on casting our iron shadow worldwide….?
Forget about who won the election. Forget about the Republican vs. Democrat spin just for a few minutes. Focus on the empire that needs to be pulled back… NOW! You’ll have plenty of time and loads of ‘found money ‘to debate about where and how to spend it. It’s the empire… stupid!
