Et tu Brute?
More proof that elections have consequences – the Obama Administration has ordered the release of hundreds and possibly thousands of illegal aliens currently under Department of Homeland Security (DHS) detention thanks to the sequestration now in effect as of March 1. What has been reported, but apparently forgotten, is that Obama himself signed the sequestration agreement into law as part of the Budget Control Act (BCA) of 2011.
The BCA limits or “caps” overall discretionary spending for the next ten years. These caps will reduce spending by $841 billion over the next decade. The $85 billion in so-called cuts contained within the law will reduce deficit spending by 2% per year. The administration had sought to cast the cuts as being draconian and harmful to the US economy but recently backtracked saying that most Americans would not notice any difference.
Sequestration is a puzzle but some sense of it seems to have been made in an article published by Auburn University’s Department of Political Science. “Under sequestration, an amount of money equal to the difference between the cap set in the Budget Resolution and the amount actually appropriated is “sequestered” by the Treasury and not handed over to the agencies to which it was originally appropriated by Congress. In theory, every agency has the same percentage of its appropriation withheld in order to take back the excessive spending on an “across the board” basis.”
Once again lacking a budget, both Republicans and Democrats alike dug in their respective heels as Republicans insisted on spending cuts while Democrats pushed for tax increases. There was no compromise attempted by the Oval Office as the administration rather chose to blame the Republican’s intransigence as the cause for an across the board, end of the world, loss of benefits for all scenario.
In the tried and true “let no crisis go to waste” maneuver, the administration, by way of the DHS, began releasing hundreds of illegal aliens held in local jails awaiting deportation in response to the sequestration.
Pinal County Arizona Sheriff, Paul Babeu, said that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials stated that they plan the release of as many as 10,000 illegal aliens in the coming weeks. Babeu described the action as a “mass budget pardon” that the Obama administration was using to go to unnecessary lengths to demonstrate the impact of the sequester.
“President Obama would never release 500 criminal illegals to the streets of his hometown, yet he has no problem with releasing them in Arizona. The safety of the public is threatened and the rule of law discarded as a political tactic in this sequester battle,“ he said
ICE officials refused to comment on actual numbers but DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano said that she had no part in the decision to release the illegals and that it, the release, was poorly timed.
What? Me Worry?
In earlier Congressional testimony on February 13, Napolitano said, “I often hear the argument that before (immigration) reform can move forward, we must first secure our borders. But too often, the ‘border security first’ refrain simply serves as an excuse for failing to address the underlying problems. It also ignores the significant progress and efforts that we have undertaken over the past four years. Our borders have, in fact, never been stronger.”
Obviously she is not acquainted with the November 2012 Majority Report findings of the US House Committee on Homeland Security that found among other things that:
– The US – Mexico border remains an obvious weak link in the chain (security);
– Experts believe the Southwest border has become the great threat of terrorist infiltration into the US;
– Iran and Hezbollah have a growing presence in Latin America;
– Hezbollah has a significant presence in the US that could be utilized in terror attacks intended to deter US efforts to curtail Iran’s nuclear program.
If we’re to believe what we’re being told, then the conclusion is obvious. We have nowhere to go. We have barbarians at the gate (southwest border), terrorists in our midst, and potentially tens of thousands of newly released or soon to be released illegal alien criminals wandering the streets of America and all of this because a president didn’t get his way.
Take a reasoned look at the state of US border security. Now, we can’t even secure our streets.
If anyone has any idea of where we might go to find some hint of sanity, I’m open to suggestions.
