Russian Prime Minister, Sergey Lavrov

The US has made clear through its rhetoric that an attack on Syria is imminent.

Russia has warned the United States about the “catastrophic” consequences that an armed intervention in Syria will have in the Middle East. The Russian government expressed its “deep alarm” over Washington’s willingness to launch a military operation against the regime of Bashar al-Assad.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov conveyed these concerns to his American colleague, John Kerry, in the course of a telephone conversation in which they discussed the situation in Syria. The talk was held in  Moscow, where the two foreign secretaries discussed the developments in the region, among other sensitive topics that affect both nations.

The Russian ministry informed about the conversation with Kerry, saying that the statements from some American leaders causes “bewilderment” in the sense that they accuse the Syrian government as the party responsible for the chemical attack perpetrated last week.

The Kremlin believes that the attack was a provocation by the fundamentalist opposition against the Assad regime, which is interested in accusing the president and his government of the barbaric use of chemical weapons so that the United States and its allies finally begin military intervention in the Arab country.

The attack occurred last Wednesday, the same day UN experts arrived to Damascus to investigate previous allegations of use of chemical weapons in the conflict. The specialists now have a green light to investigate what happened in Eastern Ghouta, the area on the outskirts of the capital where last week hundreds of people were killed as a result of the chemical attack. The attack took place just days after US-trained terrorists invaded Syria to continue fighting Syria’s military forces.

Moscow called for restraint regarding a military intervention in Syria as the UN experts investigate impartially the facts on the ground.

Lavrov also warned of extremely dangerous consequences “catastrophic” according to a note released on Sunday, which a military intervention in Syria will have for the rest of the Middle East and North Africa, “where the people still feel the impact of the destabilizing actions against Iraq and Libya “. Those two nations were American made disasters.

In a press conference held hours later, Lavrov insisted that a war scenario by Western countries not only contradicts international law if done without the approval of the UN but will also have dire consequences for the region.

The Russian minister regretted that the claims against Syria are based on zero evidence for the use of chemical weapons. He said such actions do not match the Lucerne agreements of the Group of Eight, which were adopted so that the supposed use of chemical weapons would be thoroughly investigated by professionals and the results could be presented to the Security Council. Instead, it seems the US is in a rush to attack Syria without waiting for any investigation to be completed. This is astonishing provided that the chemical attack seems to have been another false-flag event to help the imperialistic intentions of western aggressors.

Moreover, Lavrov said, unlike Russia’s investigations in the past, no evidence has now shown that the Syrian government is to blame.

Nevertheless, Moscow “is not thinking about going to war with anyone,” said Lavrov. That is, if the U.S. and its allies attack Syria, Russia will not intervene.

On Sunday, the Russian Foreign Ministry had warned Washington that it should not repeat the mistakes of the past, as in the case of Iraq, based on false information to intervene militarily. The United States justified its invasion ten years ago claiming that Hussein had weapons of mass destruction, which turned out to be false.

Assad, meanwhile, described as “an insult to common sense” the allegations against his government. In an interview published in the Russian newspaper Izvestia, Assad said that if the United States invades Syria, it will “fail as badly as it did in Vietnam.”

Russia has a naval base in Syria and excellent relations with the Assad regime, which has provided the country with a modern air defense complex. The Russian Orthodox Church also supports the Syrian regime, because under Assad, the Christians of that country can practice their religion without major problems. They fear any kind of  victory of the Islamist opposition will originate the persecution of other faiths.

Hence, the Kremlin would like to see a political solution to the conflict, with safeguards for Christians and trying to keep the internal situation as stable as it has been for a long time, which is different from what has happened in other Arab countries that have changed in recent times.

British Prime Minister, David Cameron, has returned early from its vacation to discuss the crisis in Syria at a meeting of the National Security Council. The decision comes after the British foreign minister, William Hague, warned of a possible military intervention, even if it did not have the unanimous support of the Security Council of the UN.

London and Washington understand that the arrival of UN inspectors in Damascus is too little too late, so that the military option remains open. “Is it possible to respond to chemical weapons without complete unity of the Security Council? I would say yes. Otherwise, it would be impossible to respond to these atrocities, these crimes,” Hague told the BBC.

Military attacks without the support of the Security Council are not anything new. It happened in the Kosovo-Serb territory, where people were bombed by NATO aircraft. In the case of Syria, this is one of the choices presented to the U.S. president, Barack Obama to address the situation in Syria.

China, meanwhile, has called for “caution” in resolving the crisis after the use of chemical weapons “to avoid interfering in the search for a political solution,” according to a statement by Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

The leaders of the USA, Barack Obama, and the United Kingdom, David Cameron, spoke on Saturday night and increased the pressure on Syria. Russia insists that no illegal weapons have been used by the government and, in fact, those that have used them are the rebel forces coincidentally supported by the US and the UK.

Meanwhile in Europe, neither Germany nor the EU government have issued any clear statement regarding their position on the Syrian issue. France, on the other hand, has been vocal about its support for a military intervention. French President François Hollande, agreed yesterday with U.S. President Barack Obama. about ganging up to attack Syria. Hollande called this a “unified response”.

The French President said that “there is already a handful of elements indicating that the August 21 attack was of chemical nature.” The note stressed that “everything points toward the Syrian regime as responsible “for this unspeakable act”.
